What Does the Village Board of Trustees Do?

The Village Board of Trustees consists of five members who are the legislative body responsible for overall operations with the Mayor serving as the chief executive officer.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Legislation and Policy Making:

The Board of Trustees is responsible for passing local laws and ordinances for the Village; through this, they ensure the health, safety and general welfare of Village residents.  They establish overall policies and the direction of the Village and are responsible for overseeing Village operations and protecting public property and resources.

2. Annual Budget:

Working closely with the Village Administrator and the Treasury Department, the Board of Trustees are responsible for adopting the annual budget that is presented.

3. Financial Management:

Tax rates and fee schedules are approved by the Board of Trustees.  Through their claims process, all Village bills are reviewed and a monthly abstract of claims is approved.

4. Public Meetings and Transparency:

Board members attend and vote on all matters during public meetings, which are conducted in compliance with open meetings laws. They also ensure access to public records and provide opportunities for resident input.

 The Board has the power to create or abolish offices, boards, agencies, and commissions by resolution. They typically appoint key personnel such as the Village Administrator, Counsel, Village Clerk-Treasurer, often with the Mayor's advice and consent. They also review and approve the work of various appointed boards and committees.
